CDC’s Immunization Program plays a fundamental role in achieving national immunization goals and sustaining high vaccination coverage rates to prevent death and disability from VPDs. CDC provides funding to support public health functions and ensure program effectiveness and scientifically sound immunization policy. A strong public health infrastructure at the national, state, and local levels is vital to sustaining high vaccination coverage levels and low incidence of VPDs. This support also maintains public health preparedness for response to a vaccine-preventable national emergency, such as a pandemic or biologic attack.

Supporting State Immunization Programs
CDC provides immunization funding to state, cities and territories through a non-competitive, formula-based award program that provides financial assistance for state and local immunization operations. In addition, CDC works with our state and local public health partners to implement the VFC program by providing direct assistance to provide vaccine for VFC-eligible children and funding for program operations.
This investment supports the immunization workforce and systems that:
Assure access to vaccines, promote public awareness of new and expanded vaccine recommendations, and manage vaccine shortages.
Prevents disease outbreaks and responds early and rapidly should they occur.
Prepares to respond to other urgent vaccine emergencies, such as pandemics.
VFC Program
The Vaccines for Children (VFC) program offers vaccines at no cost to eligible children through health care providers enrolled in the program. Vaccinating on time means healthier children, families, and communities. Find out if your child qualifies for the VFC program.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) receives funding for the VFC program through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In general, state health departments manage the VFC program, but in some locations, it may be managed by a city or territorial health department. CDC can help you find the VFC program closest to you.
Strengthening Immunization Through Science and Innovation
To ensure safe and effective immunization policies and programs, CDC funds public health departments, universities and other entities to:
Strengthen the science supporting vaccine recommendations and program strategies.
Support epidemiology and laboratory capacity to detect VPD outbreaks and changes in diseases.
Monitor the safety and effectiveness of vaccines.
Influenza Immunization Funding
CDC helps protect the nation from seasonal and pandemic influenza. Influenza investments improve vaccine impact, enhance detection and response, and assess risk and pandemic readiness throughout the United States. Investments in states support national efforts to improve influenza prevention through vaccination and collect data that helps decide the makeup of the next season’s flu vaccine. CDC’s support for states contribute to the critical U.S. system to better identify and respond to threats from seasonal and pandemic influenza and the development of newer, better flu vaccines.
